December 2024 Farmers’ Corner

6 December 2024

Welcome to our December edition of Farmers’ Corner.

This month we will be hearing from Linley, Elizabeth, and Dickson about how Tiyeni and Deep Bed Farming have impacted each of their lives.

Linley Divala, Kummayani Village, Chiwamba hub

Linley has benefitted greatly from all of the commonly-known impacts of DBF like increased crop yields and income alongside improved resilience to climate change. But one of the aspects of DBF that has really stood out to her is the social component. Linley appreciates how Tiyeni’s training promotes interaction with her fellow farmers, group synergy, and knowledge sharing through our Decentralised Demonstration Garden method. In the rightmost photo below, Linley’s (right) field is being featured to demonstrate how to conduct contour ridge marking.

Elizabeth and her husband Gospel adopted DBF more than five years ago, and their lives have been completely transformed! Because of DBF, Elizabeth and Gospel’s family were able to move beyond subsistence-level farming to create a business. They began by getting a motorbike four years ago, later acquired two pairs of oxen, and have recently purchased a maize mill.

Join Elizabeth as she walks us through her farm and shares the ways in which DBF has enabled her and her family to build a self-sustaining livelihood here.

Dickson Cholasa, Magagada Village, Mulanje hub

Dickson has been chosen by his village to be the chairman of the committee to oversee Tiyeni’s new water catchment management project in Mulanje. As part of this project, Tiyeni is upskilling farmers like Dickson in how to measure and control soil erosion, which is particularly devastating in Mulanje. Dickson says that DBF has already had a huge impact in minimising soil erosion. He is excited to share the new skills he learns from Tiyeni with his peers to help his community become more climate resilient.
