Our Partnerships

We believe collaboration drives impact! We maintain strong partnerships with government, academic, research, non-profit, and private sector organisations to deliver innovative, sustainable agricultural solutions across Malawi.

Government Partners

We work closely with the Government of Malawi, primarily with the Ministry of Agriculture, training Agricultural Extension Officers in climate-smart Deep Bed Farming techniques.

Our collaboration also extends to the Northern Region Water Board, where we promote integrated approaches to agriculture, water, and catchment management through a Functional Landscape Approach (FLA).

Non-Profit Partners

Tiyeni collaborates with international and local non-profits to implement community-focused agricultural programmes. Key partners include

The Malawi Scotland Partnership
Owned and led by Malawians, the Malawi Scotland Partnership (MaSP) is a network that works to support and to develop Malawi’s civil society links with Scotland. The MaSP works with individuals, communities, and organisations to coordinate, represent, and support links and cooperation between the two nations. Over 208,000 Malawians are actively involved in the MaSP and the partnerships it facilitates. Tiyeni officially joined the MaSP in 2024.

A “sister society” to the Malawi Scotland Partnership, the Scotland Malawi Partnership (SMP) is the national civil society network coordinating, supporting, and representing the people-to-people links between Scotland and Malawi. The SMP represents a community of 109,000 Scots with active links to Malawi. Tiyeni was invited to be a member of the SMP in 2023, prior to our registration in Scotland, testifying to our strong links with Malawi. Since becoming a cross-border charity in 2024, Tiyeni has built upon this relationship to grow our presence and advocacy efforts in Scotland.

Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI)
The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is an NGO that works globally to change how water is understood, valued, and managed. SIWI works with countries, communities, companies, and other NGOs to distribute information, build capacity, and offer policy advice. Tiyeni has collaborated with SIWI as part of their Transforming Investment in Africa’s Rainfed Agriculture (TIARA) project. We are excited to expand on this collaboration with SIWI as they join Tiyeni as a partner in our Lunyangwa River watershed project, which will further explore and develop Deep Bed Farming’s hydrological conservation benefits.

MetaMeta / SMART Centre Group
MetaMeta is a social enterprise that delivers practical solutions for sustainable water and land management, climate resilience, and green infrastructure. The organisation cooperates with governments, universities, and NGOs, and coordinates SMART Centres in nine African countries. The activities of Tiyeni and MetaMeta is complementary; we have partnered together on projects such as MetaMeta's SMART Centre in Malawi, where we worked on water well initiatives to support sustainable development for communities. Increases in communities’ livelihood assets from this project, which were achieved through water pump installation and Deep Bed Farming, have enabled families to reach the first stage of basic water security for the first time. MetaMeta also supports Tiyeni through strong advocacy efforts; MetaMeta presents regularly at international conferences about Deep Bed Farming in connection with their work for self-supply of water resources.

Sustainable Global Gardens
Sustainable Global Gardens (SGG) is a UK-based NGO that operates across the globe to end extreme poverty and hunger. SGG’s Managing Director, Paul Keeley, partners with Tiyeni and Zomba TREEZ to deliver the TREEZ-Sustainable Global Gardens co-operation in Malawi.

BASEflow
BASEflow is an NGO whose mission is to improve the sustainability of groundwater resources to rural populations so that they have access to safe drinking water. They are currently working on a Trocaire Irish Civil Society Programme project in Balaka, Chikwawa, and Machinga to support farming technologies that support rainwater harvesting for managed aquifer recharge. BASEflow and their partners have participated in a Deep Bed Farming training with Tiyeni. With ongoing support from Tiyeni, BASEflow are integrating Deep Bed Farming into their upcoming project planning across all three districts where they work. This integration will involve all of BASEflow’s partners, such as Circle for Integrated Community Development (CICOD), Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM), and the Ministry of Agriculture, furthering the reach and impact of our work.

The Soil Food Web School
The Soil Food Web School is an international community of change agents whose mission is to empower individuals and organisations to regenerate the soils in their communities. They train people who help farmers to transition away from using chemicals, to working in harmony with soil biology, resulting in significant benefits to farmers, consumers, and the environment. Tiyeni joined the Soil Food Web School as partner charity in 2021, and has presented at their Soil Regen Summits.

Research and Academic Partners

Picture
Our climate-smart Deep Bed Farming (DBF) approach is grounded in rigorous research. We work with national and international universities and research institutions to strengthen innovation, learning, and evidence-based practice. Our partners include:
  • Malawi: Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Bunda College), University of Livingstonia, Mzuzu University
  • International: Loughborough University (UK), University of Worcester (UK), Kyoto University (Japan)

We also collaborate Malawi’s Department of Agricultural Research (& Technical) Services (DARS/DARTS). DARS is a technical department of the Ministry of Agriculture that conducts demand-driven market- and client-oriented agricultural research. Tiyeni began working with DARS in 2017 when our Country Director Isaac Monjo Chavula approached the Department’s director, Dr Wilkson Makumba, about evaluating Deep Bed Farming against commonly-promoted farming methods in Malawi.

This work led to Deep Bed Farming’s
official adoption by the Malawian Ministry of Agriculture in 2021. Since then, Tiyeni have been working tirelessly with DARS and the rest of Malawi’s Ministry of Agriculture to embed Deep Bed Farming in agriculture practice throughout the country.

Consortiums and Innovation

Tiyeni participates in cutting-edge initiatives such as the AFTRAK consortium (with Loughborough University) and the Innovate UK-funded Consortium for Battery Innovation, supporting solar tractor development.

Private Sector Partners

We partner with select private sector organisations to strengthen sustainable agricultural value chains and foster locally grounded solutions that benefit farmers and communities across Malawi.

How can I donate to Tiyeni?
You can easily donate to us on our Donate page. You can also find other ways to support our work here.

How are my donations to Tiyeni used?
You support goes towards our core activity of training farmers in Deep Bed Farming. Donations by supporters like you help fund our work to lift a farmer, a family, or a community out of poverty by training them for life. This work could be specialised Lead Farmer training, gender mainstreaming activities to empower women, or a field event to spread knowledge to an entire village.

A vital part is spent on operational costs, including investing in training for our staff. Our training team are at the heart of our success. The bigger the team, the more communities we can reach. Our UK expenditure is kept to a minimum in order to channel funds to where they are most impactful: in Malawi.
