June 2024 Farmers’ Corner

4 June 2024

Welcome to Tiyeni’s new feature, Farmers’ Corner! These bite-sized emails highlight the stories of some of the farmers we are working with.

Don’t worry – your inbox won’t get flooded with emails! Farmers’ Corner will be sent out just four times a year, in between our quarterly newsletters, to give supporters like you a look into how Tiyeni is changing the lives of smallholder farmers across Malawi.

Stuart Ziba – Baula

While most of Malawi’s population is experiencing a devastating food insecurity crisis, DBF farmers like Stuart Ziba are harvesting plentiful crop yields. In his first year, Stuart planted 0.4 hectares of his field using DBF and is expected to harvest 80-90 bags of 50 kg each!

Bestie Mhone, Tchemba Section

Tiyeni’s training in Bestie Mhone’s (front left) community ended three years ago. She and her community were so thrilled with the life-changing effects of Deep Bed Farming that they invited our team to come and see how much their community is thriving. Tiyeni’s Training Manager, Godfrey Kumwenda (front right), was delighted to see what an impact Tiyeni’s work has had on Bestie and her fellow farmers.

Nellie Nkunika, Emsizini

Nellie Nkunika inter-cropped maize with beans and pumpkins in her Deep Bed Farming field. The beans and pumpkins act as cover crops, which naturally maintain soil health. By diversifying her crops, Nellie also benefits from a healthier, more diverse diet than the largely maize-based diets consumed by most people who use conventional farming.
